Well to start with as a freelance web designer, I am able to offer the personal service that design companies (no matter how much they try to say they can) just can't. If you contact me, you get me not a secretary who will pass you to someone else who is not your designer and may not be able to help as your designer is unavailable (adtrack from my personal experience spring to mind).
Also as a freelancer I obviously rely heavily on word-of-mouth recommendations and return business from existing clients. I can only hope to get this by achieving great customer satisfaction (check out my testimonials page to see what my clients say).
